2025 is the Year of Snake and to celebrate the New Year, I thought I'll do a cute snake-themed craft activity with my daughter. She loved the activity so much that I decided to do the same activity with my Arts and Crafts students at the local international school. This paper snake puppet craft idea is super easy and fun to make, maybe you'd also like to make one?
Paper Snake Puppet
Materials
Watercolour Paper (or other sturdy paper)
Pencil
Black Permanent Ink Marker
Scissors
Watercolour Paint
Paint Brush
Hole Puncher
Split Pins
Template for Paper Snake Puppet (optional)
Step 1
If you want to make exactly the same snake as we have, make sure you download and print the free Paper Snake Puppet template. Once you print the template, glue it onto a watercolour paper or any sturdy paper like card stock paper. If you're happy making your own snake, skip this step.
Step 2
Cut out the different body parts. Some of my younger students (around age 4-5) struggled with cutting, especially the snake's head. You might need to assist them or pre-cut all/some parts before doing the activity depending on how large the group is.
Step 3
Draw different patterns using the black permanent marker. You can also do a pre-sketch with a pencil before using the marker. The idea is to draw a different pattern on each of the body parts. It might be handy to have a reference sheet with different patterns to give kids some ideas to get started.
Step 4
Once you're happy with the patterns you have drawn, it's time to paint with watercolour.
Step 5
Once the paint is fully dry, go ahead and assemble the parts using split pins.
Enjoy slithering your new Paper Snake Puppet! Happy crafting xx
